Mailchimp retiring legacy Shopify app Feb. 23

Mailchimp is retiring its “legacy” Shopify app Feb. 23, 2022.

Customers are being encouraged to transition to the “new” Mailchimp for Shopify app as soon as possible.

The new app offers most of the same features as the legacy one, including the ability to sync contacts and ecommerce data between the two services.

After Feb. 23, Mailchimp says it will stop synching data between Shopify stores and its marketing tools, but existing contacts won’t be removed.

Shopify and Mailchimp have a bit of a stormy past.

Back in 2019, the two companies got into a public spat over the integration, with Shopify blaming Mailchimp for not being willing to accept new policies over personal information. Mailchimp, meanwhile, said that it had been negotiating with Shopify for several months but could not come to an agreement.

The app was pulled from the Shopify platform briefly in November 2018 and then again May 12, 2019.

In late 2021, the two companies announced they were getting back together, triggering the release of a new Mailchimp app in the Shopify App Store.

At the time Mailchimp was in the process of rolling out its own ecommerce solution, which some speculated may have been the reason talks went sour between the two companies.

Later in 2019, Shopify announced its own integrated email marketing service.

In September 2021, Intuit announced it would acquire Mailchimp for approximately $12 billion.
