Shopify experiencing outages

Shopify is experiencing what appears to be a significant systems outage Sept. 30, 2021.

According to the company’s status page, store admin areas are listed as a “partial outage” while storefront and support are listed as “degraded” performance.

The admin access appears to also extend to the company’s partner dashboards, which Shopify theme, app and other partners use. Merchants are also having issues authenticating their accounts before accessing Shopify technical support and customer service.

While it’s not immediately clear how “degraded” storefront performance is, it does appear that the downtime is affecting the admin area more than public store sites and checkout, meaning at least some stores are still “open” and able to accept orders.

If this is the case, the would mainly affect store owners’ ability to manage products, orders, pages and other parts of their store. Some partners will also be unable to access their dashboard to manage app and theme listings, review revenue and other reports or see referrals.

The issue was first identified at 9:17 a.m. eastern and Shopify provided a generic update at 10 a.m. reading “We are still investigating this outage, and will keep you updated.”

Then, at 10:37 a.m., another update read: “The root cause of the current outage has been identified and we are working on a fix. We will continue to keep you updated.”

At 11:34 a.m. the site was updated to read “Merchants and partners experienced issues logging in to multiple areas of Shopify, including admins. A fix has been implemented which has mitigated the issue for admin logins, however some areas of Shopify are still having login issues.”

Anecdotal evidence on social media indicates that many are still having issues accessing the admin.

Meanwhile, a separate incident reported around 8:53 a.m. Sept. 30 reads “Some reports for discounts are currently presenting old data. We are investigating and will keep you updated.”

Based on that statement, it would appear that this incident is separate from the admin, since it’s listed in the “reports and dashboards” category, and would only affect select stores’ reporting functionality regarding use and status of discount codes.
