Time cover uses subtle typographic placement to stand in for Trump’s penis

Time magazine released the third in a series of Donald Trump covers that draws inspiration from a Nirvana album cover, with a typographic accent standing in for Trump’s penis.

• The cover is from artist Tim O’Brien, who also designed simlar covers with the lines “Nothing to see here” and “Stormy.
• These covers showed Trump at Resolute Desk in the Oval Office.
• For “Nothing to see here,” from March 2017, piles of paper are shown being blown away.
• “Stormy,” a reference to Trump’s alleged affair with Stormy Daniels, ran in April 2018 and adds an angry ocean covering the desk.
• On the latest cover, “In deep,” Trump is shown floating near the top of the water, which has now filled the scene.

• People were quick to notice the similarities to the 1991 Nirvana album “Nevermind,” which featured a nude baby floating in a pool reaching out to a dollar bill attached to a string.
• The album cover drew attention because it showed the baby’s genitalia (it’s been covered in the image above to make this post safer for work).

• Upon closer inspection, Time hid another reference to the Nirvana album cover — the “point” at the bottom of the letter “M” is strategically positioned between Trump’s legs.
• Most of the “Time” logotype is hidden behind Trump’s figure, which isn’t uncommon in magazine cover design — especially given Time’s trademark red border that helps readers recognize the title on newsstands.
• To make the design work, the logotype has also been lowered slightly.
