Mailchimp and Shopify are so done with each other

Following what’s apparently an on-again off-again relationship, it looks like Shopify and Mailchimp have broken up.

  • In a statement issued March 22, 2019, Mailchimp announced it has requested Shopify remove its app and integration.
  • The app will remain functional, however, until May 12.
  • This follows a November 2018 incident where Shopify yanked the app — but it was eventually restored.
  • However, this time it appears Mailchimp made the move to remove the app, after “months” of “trying to work with Shopify on terms that would be fair and equitable for both of our businesses.”
  • The statement referenced recent changes Shopify made to its app store and developer requirements that involve the sharing of personal information, which go into effect May 12.
  • Behind the scenes, meanwhile, Shopify ecommerce competitor LemonStand announced in March it would be shutting down and company execs Danny Halarewich and  Bruce Alderson joined Rocket Science Group, the parent company of Mailchimp, which has led some to speculate that Mailchimp will be building its own ecommerce functionality or platform.
  • Mailchimp is offering resources that contain workarounds and alternatives to get email addresses and contact information from a Shopify store to its platform.
  • For some time now, Shopify has required that themes included in the theme store send email addresses to Shopify’s own list — from which they can be synched to other platforms (which is what the Mailchimp integration did).
  • Themes not available in the Shopify Theme Store, such as Turbo, often still include the “form action” approach to integrating newsletter signups, which renders the need for an app unnecessary.
