Shopify has announced changes to the limits on videos hosted via the “Files” section of its administration backend.

The changes, which went live June 15, 2022, include a bump to 1 GB in size and up to 10 minutes in length. Previously, the limit was 20 MB for any file uploading using the files area of the admin.

Shopify has also enhanced video uploads with the ability to update the cover image of video clips, which are shown before it starts playing, as well as providing alt text.

The limits do not apply to videos hosted on third-party sites but embedded on Shopify stores, such as YouTube or Vimeo. Those sites set their own limits.

In addition, metafields that reference media can now be set to only allow media, as opposed to text or numbers.
