Shopify has quietly started rolling out broader support for the new “product media” standard even as ecommerce and retail is facing upheaval from the coronavirus pandemic.

Product media is essentially replacing the “images” feature in Shopify ā€” a change that’s designed to allow for easier and better integration with video, 3D models and augmented reality.

The official Shopify documentation still lists the feature as “beta” as of March 17, 2020.

Stores with the feature enabled will see the “images” section on the product detail panel in the admin titled as “media.”

Using this new feature requires having a Shopify theme that’s been updated to be compatible with the new feature ā€” which includes Shopify’s own free theme Debut Version 16 or higher.

Many Shopify theme developers already rolled out updates to their themes that include support for this feature ā€” but this will vary from developer to developer (Out of the Sandbox’s themes have been updated).
