Global broadcasting giants BBC News Global, CNN International and Euronews are partnering to donate a combined $50 million worth of advertising spots to public health organizations to help get accurate coronavirus information out to the public.
“Whilst CNN’s editorial staff are working tirelessly to ensure people everywhere have the most up to date and accurate facts, it also makes sense to promote the public health agencies’ messaging,” said president of CNN International Commercial Rani Raad, in a statement issued by all three organizations. “By working with our competitors, I hope this combined effort has a positive impact and our global footprint helps reach as many people as possible.”
The World Health Organization will be the first group to take advantage of the free public service announcement spots.
Donated advertising will include both linear and online and the networks will give organizations the ability to target geographically in order to reach specific regions of the world.
BBC News Global is the parent company of BBC World News and, is in turn, owned by public service broadcaster BBC.
Unlike the BBC proper, BBC News Global and BBC World News are considered commercial operations and earn revenue from both subscription fees and advertising, while the BBC and BBC News are generally limited in showing advertising to viewers inside the United Kingdom.
CNN International is an English language global service owned by CNN and its parent, WarnerMedia.
Euronews is owned partially by American news organization NBC News and its parent NBCUniversal.
