The Capital Gazette, who lost five staffers to a deadly shooting Thursday, June 28, 2019 in its newsroom, paid tribute to their fallen colleagues with a “blank” opinion page.

  • The page, which features only the normal page header and masthead and a small block of text, starts with the sentence “Today we are speechless.”
  • It then reads “This page is intentionally left blank today to commemorate victims of Thursday’s shooting at our office.”
  • The names Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith and Wendi Winters, all who died in the shooting, are listed, each on its own line.
  • The text concludes with “Tomorrow this page will return to its steady purpose of offering our readers informed opinon about the world around them, that they might be better citizens.”
