“CBS Evening News” anchor Norah O’Donnell wasn’t behind the anchor desk May 24, 2022, after she tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend.
John Dickerson was filling in for O’Donnell in Washington.
Tonight, @tonydokoupil will anchor the @CBSEveningNews from Uvalde to cover this horrible elementary school massacre and ask what will change. I will be watching from home as I am still recovering from Covid, but my heart is in Texas.

After the May 23, 2022, Uvalde school shooting, CBS will broadcast “Evening” from the Texas town with “CBS Mornings” co-anchor Tony Dokupil filling in for O’Donnell.
Earlier in 2022, amid speculation that CBS might drop O’Donnell due to her high price and low ratings, Dokupil’s name was circulated as a possible replacement for her.
O’Donnell and CBS eventually came to an agreement and she will continue to anchor the broadcast through at least the 2024 election.
