During its coverage of Hurricane Florence, Friday, Sept. 14, Fox News claimed that “500 million” in North Carolina were without power due to the storm — which is higher than entire population of the United States.
- The lower third banner appeared shortly after noon eastern at the top of “Outnumbered.”
- The text was likely meant to read “500,000” but a typographic error ballooned the number to 500 million.
- The entire U.S. population is approximately 325.7 million, while North Carolina’s is 10.27 million.
- If Fox News’ number was accurate (it wasn’t), it would mean the entire country was without power — plus another 174 million people.
