‘Friends’ reunion, delayed by COVID, is heading into the studio in April

That HBO Max “Friends” reunion special is finally ready to tape.

WarnerMedia had initially planned one using the special as a way to lure viewers to its new streamer, which launched in May 2020, but the ongoing coronavirus crisis cause the taping to be delayed multiple times. Its original tape date was March 2020, right when the pandemic was heating up.

At least one cast member hinted recently it might tape in March 2021.

There’s no word on when the final version of the special will hit the platform, but Hollywood Reporter sources say all six primary cast members, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LaBlanc and Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer will be on the Warner Bros. lot in California to tape the special on the same stage the show spent nine of its 10 years.

Each of the six leads will receive approximately $2.5 million to appear, according to reports.

Creators Marta Kaufmann and David Crane will also appear.

HBO Max had already secured the streaming rights for the iconic sitcom, beating out several big names, spending a reported $425 million.

Traditional TV syndication deals, which are typically separate from streaming rights, have reportedly generated tens of millions of dollars each year in income for each of the six primary cast members — who reportedly get 3% of all syndication earnings.

“Friends” repeats air regularly on a variety of linear TV stations and networks.

HBO max declined to comment to multiple oulets.
