Google News inventor returns to company

Krishna Bharat, the man who invented Google News, has returned to the company after four years away.

While gone, Bharat publicly called out Google for its vetting process after 4Chan posts identifying the wrong person as the Las Vegas shooter appeared on the service.

Bharat was part of a team that built Google News in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.

The service scans tens of thousands of news articles published every day and then uses algorithms to determine how they are placed on Google’s news website or apps.

Google News is therefore vulnerable to error such as the Las Vegas shooter incident or identifying old news as new.
