How this year’s new shows are performing (hint: it’s not stellar)
With most network scripted shows on winter break, it’s time to take stock in the ratings — and the news isn’t good.
- None — repeat none — of any network’s new scripted shows are ranked in Nielsen’s top 25 shows.
- So far, the season has had only one official casualty, “Sunnyside,” which NBC moved to its digital platforms after just four broadcast airings — and even then only seven more will be available.
- CBS is facing its first season since 2007 without comedy powerhouse “The Big Bang Theory.”
- While “The Unicorn,” “Carol’s Second Act” and “Bob Hearts Abishola” have been working well as a comedy block, “Unicorn” leads the pack with 7.2 million viewers in the live plus seven days rating.
- However, that’s nowhere near the 18 million “Big Bang” was pulling in when it wrapped in May.
- CBS’s “All Rise” is performing well in the drama category — 7.7 million.
- ABC’s “Stumptown” is registering similar numbers and both have gotten full season orders.
- CBS’s “Evil,” which was planned as a 13 episode first season, has already gotten renewed.
- “Prodigal Son” has gotten a full season order on Fox.
- The CW is given full season commitments to “Batwoman” and “Nancy Drew.”
Meanwhile, another factor is at play — networks are now more commonly ordering shorter seasons — around 13 episodes — and if the show doesn’t perform well, playing it off as a “limited series” (even if it’s technically being canceled).
- If you take that into account, NBC’s “Bluff City Law” was stopped after its initial 10 episode order.
- Fox’s “Almost Family” is in a similar situation.
- Meanwhile, ABC’s “Emergence” had an initial 13 episode order, but a second order is up in the air.
- NBC has yet to make a call on “Perfect Harmony,” which will end early to make room for midseason replacements.
