NBC Sports will shut down the national NBCSN network by the end of 2021, the company announced Jan. 22, 2021.
Regional sports networks NBCUniversal’s sports group operates in major markets and often in partnership with local sports franchises, will continue to operate, however.
These RSNs are typically branded as “NBC Sports (City or Region Name)” and were formerly called “Comcast SportsNet (City or Region Name).”
NBCSN originally stood for “NBC Sports Network” but is still sometimes confused with the old “SportsNet” branding.
The NBCSN channel has its roots in the Outdoor Life Network and was also known as Versus from 2006 to 2011.
NBCSN’s content will migrate to other NBCUniversal owned properties, namely USA Network and streamer Peacock.
Reports say that the carriage deals for NBCSN are set to expire soon with key cable and satellite providers and it’s unlikely NBCU will launch another service to take its place.
