Netflix, Nickelodeon strike animation deal

Netflix has forged a deal with Nickelodeon to produce original animated feature films and TV shows.
- The multi-year deal will include content with existing Nickelodeon characters and franchises as well as new ones.
- The partnership comes after several production partnerships between the two companies.
- The new content, as well as past projects, will be available for streaming on the Netflix platform.
- Nickelodeon and Netflix’s partnership comes at a key time as the service is set to start losing family friendly Disney titles to Disney+ (though that process isn’t happening all at once).
- The new partnership is specifically focused on family and kid programming.
- As licensing third party content becomes more challenging as content owners are starting the process of taking back streaming licensing rights from services such as Netflix, original programming has become a key for the streamer.
- The company already spends billions on producing its own original series, feature films and specials.
- However, since it’s not directly linked to a traditional movie or TV studio, it’s often at the mercy of those content producers over streaming rights.
- Many of those studios are connected to other media conglomerates, such as Warner Bros. being part of the WarnerMedia and AT&T family, which is planning to launch HBO Max, and Universal’s link to NBC’s upcoming Peacock streamer.
