Senate considering tight rules on journalists during impeachment trial
While Donald Trump’s impeachment trial will likely be televised, Senate leadership is weighing measures to limit journalists covering the trial from inside the Senate chamber.
- Some of the rules being considered including keeping reporters in a sequestered “penned in” areas and banning them from walking around freely outside the chamber.
- In addition, Senate leaders are also considering upping security requirements.
- The Standing Committee of Correspondents has fired back at Senate leadership “vigorously” objecting to the proposed restrictions.
- The group says it’s not clear how the proposal would improve safety “rather than simply limit coverage of the trial.”
- “Installing a magnetometer means the Senate trial will have a soundtrack of ‘beep, beep, beep’ as 90+ reporters walk in and out all day,” Sarah Wire, chair of the group, tweeted.
- “There is no additional safety or security brought by bringing such a device into reporter work space. It also gives the impression that it is being done mostly to protect Senators from the bright light of the public knowing what they are doing in one of the country’s most important moments,” she added.
- Meanwhile, Chair of the Senate Rules Committee Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Missouri), said some of the restrictions are required by the rules of impeachment trials.
- He also pointed out that reporters were “penned” during the Clinton impeachment proceedings in 1999.
- Journalists, however, argue that such rules would limit their access to lawmakers.
