Donald Trump tweeted about a purported “win” in the trade wars with China, citing CNBC — but left out some very important information.
- Trump’s posted a tweet reading “U.S. Winning Trade War With China In Dollars. CNBC.”
- That tweet appears to stem from a chart CNBC broadcast earlier on Sept. 4, 2019 that did, indeed, include that claim.
- However, as CNBC’s Steve Liesman noted in a separate tweet, Trump neglected to mention another graphic that was shown in the same segment — that China is winning in terms of percentages.
President @realDonaldTrump tweeted the headline from one of my charts this morning on @CNBC, the one showing the US is winning the trade war in dollar terms. He didn’t tweet out the other chart showing it’s losing in percentage terms. So here’s both in case you missed them. 1/ pic.twitter.com/DmNtzzcSvx

- Trump’s claim also directly defied a CNBC article, as noted by CNN’s Daniel Dale.
