‘World News Tonight’ ignores its network’s bizarre error

ABC News’ “World News Tonight” ignored the network’s brief — but high profile — inaccurate banner during a special report produced by the network earlier that day:
- ABC aired a lower third banner that inaccurately read “Manafort pleased guilty to 5 charges of manslaughter.”
- The network’s PR team apologized via Twitter for the error and says it is investigating how the text made it to air; the network also issued a statement apologizing.
- At least one ABC O&O, WLS in Chicago, mentioned the error on its 4 p.m. local newscast.
- “World News Tonight,” however, did not mention the incident Wednesday, June 20, 2018.
- The error wasn’t during “World News Tonight” and was on on air for approximately six sections, which could have lead to ABC’s decision to not mention it on its signature evening newscast.
