MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace welcomes baby girl via surrogate at 51

MSNBC “Deadline: White House” anchor Nicolle Wallace has been off-air for about a week now — and now viewers know why.

Wallace, 51, and her husband Michael S. Schmidt, who works for The New York Times and contributes to NBC News and MSNBC, welcomed a baby girl via surrogate.

The baby is named Isabella Sloane Schmidt, or “Izzy.”

“Deadline: White House” viewers were treated to the news of the birth Nov. 21, 2023, with fill-in anchor Alicia Menendez welcoming Wallace via phone.

“I understand why the truth was ruled out by so many people that Mike and I had a baby, “I have not looked at my phone in a week and am amazed at the theories out there,” Wallace said.

“Mike and Liam and I are smitten with her. Our dogs are still rendering judgment. But we were able to keep it secret, obviously, because I wasn’t pregnant, but I never meant to keep it secret from our beloved viewers,” she continued.

Wallace has a son, Liam, from her previous marriage to Mark Wallace. He is now 11.

Having a newborn at age 51 is a different experience, Nicolle acknowledged.

“You are tired. I was up all night last night, and I was, like, ‘wow, yeah, this is what 3:45 a.m. looks like,” she said during the phone interview. “But it’s a blessing to be, you know, focused again on what has always grounded me, and that’s my beautiful family.”

There’s no word on when Wallace will return to her show, but she made it clear that she’s looking toward balancing her new, expanded family with her anchoring duties.

“You know, this show is my other family, and I would never leave,” Wallace said. “I certainly would never leave in a moment this dire. I have watched your whole program today. You (Menendez) were exquisite in that chair. I am so lucky and so grateful that you are there helming these hours while I take a couple of months to hang out with Izzy.”

Wallace and Schmidt have been married since April 2022. She was previously George W. Bush’s special assistant to the president and director of media affairs at the White House. She also helped run John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign.

She also was a co-host of ABC’s “The View” for a single season. The also has written novels with White House and political connections.

She joined MSNBC as an analyst and launched “Deadline” in 2017. In 2020, the show was expanded to two hours.

Wallace has labeled herself as a “self-loathing former Republican.” She has notably supported issues such as same-sex marriage.
