ABC News correspondent Gio Benitez has been named the permanent co-anchor of “Good Morning America” weekend editions.

Benitez joined ABC in 2013 and serves as transportation correspondent for the network, though he was also frequently seen filling in on other ABC News programs.

He joins Whit Johnson and Janai Norman as co-anchors of Saturday and Sunday editions of “GMA,” following Eva Pilgrim’s exit to “GMA3: What You Need to Know.”

Pilgrim and DeMarco Morgan were chosen as replacements for Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes on the program, following the pair’s exit from the network after a behind-the-scenes romance and allegations of inappropriate behavior surfaced. Dr. Jennifer Ashton remains as the third co-anchor for “GMA3.”

Benetiz is the son of Cuban immigrants and is openly gay. He married his husband, influencer and TV personality Tommy DiDario in 2016.

Benetiz was reportedly being considered for the anchor chair at “GMA3” as the network searched for replacements for Holmes and Robach.

With his anchoring duties on “GMA” weekend only taking two days a week, it’s likely he will continue to appear on other ABC programs, including weekday editions of “GMA.”
