Former CNN and NBC anchor Campbell Brown will step down as head of media partnerships for Meta.

Brown, who spent 14 years at CNN, joined Meta (then known as Facebook) in 2017 to lead its efforts of working with news and sports outlets who use the platform to distribute content.

Meta, which is now the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, and other social platforms have been taking steps away from sending traffic to news articles over the past year.

According to a separate report in Axios, Facebook is sent around 21.4 million clicks to news site in July 2023, down from a high of just under 120 million in 2020.

Brown will exit Meta later in 2023 but plans to continue working with it as a consultant.

Brown’s exit is not surprising, given how many tech giants have soured on news. X, the company formerly known as Twitter, stopped showing headlines in posts with links to news articles in October 2023. Facebook has also been downplaying article-related posts on the platform.

Under Brown, Facebook had invested heavily in news, including initiatives to share revenue with media outlets and even accelerator programs aimed at local news organizations. She also lead the launch of the company’s fact-checking efforts.

In 2022, Brown’s role was changed to add responsibility for partnerships with sports leagues, film studios and streaming platforms as the company began its retreat from news.
