A helicopter belonging to Charlotte’s CBS affiliate WBTV crashed Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2022, killing both staffers on board.
Meteorologist Jason Myers and pilot Chip Tayag were both killed in the crash, which involved Sky3, the helicopter the station used for capturing aerial footage of news, weather and traffic events.
“The WBTV family is grieving a terrible loss. Our news helicopter Sky3 crashed mid-day Tuesday with two of our colleagues on board … we are working to comfort their families in this difficult time. We appreciate the outpouring of support for our staff and your continued prayers for their families,” the station said in a statement.
Myers is survived by his wife, Jillian, and four children. He previously worked at KRBC in Texas and WTVQ in Kentucky.
Tayag had over 20 years of experience as a pilot. He had been with the station since 2017.
It was not immediately clear what the cause of the accident was and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.
