Dr. Jerome Adams, the surgeon general of the U.S., appeared on “Fox & Friends” July 20, 2020 and begged viewers to wear masks in public as a way to cut down on the spread of coronavirus.

“I’m pleading with your viewers; I’m begging you: Please understand that we are not trying to take away your freedoms when we say wear a face covering,” Dr. Adams said.

Adams also noted that Donald Trump “supports” mask wearing in public, even though he only recently doing so for the first time.

The plea comes as there are often sharp political divides over mask wearing — with right leaning sources claiming masks are ineffective and cut off oxygen flow — among other claims.

Polling data from Gallup shows that 24% of self identified Republicans “always” wear some sort of facial covering in public while 27% said they never do.

Democrats, meanwhile, had 61% saying “always” — with only 1% responding with “never.”
