Second biggest newspaper chain is acquiring the nation’s largest

Gatehouse Media’s parent company is paying $1.38 billion for Gannett.
Gatehouse is the second largest newspaper chain in the country, while Gannett is already the largest newspaper chain.
Combined, the company would publish over 250 daily newspapers, or one-sixth of newspapers in the country, as well as the national USA Today.
The combined company will use the Gannett name.
The deal does not include Tegna, the broadcast and digital media company Gannett spun off in 2015 and still operates 47 television stations.
