German broadcaster RTL is launching a daily news show designed to bring displaced Ukrainians news about the ongoing battle between their home country and Russia.
RTL has hired Karolina Ashion, who is Ukrainian, to anchor the 10-minute newscast. It will be broadcast in Ukrainian under the name “Ukraine Update.”
An estimated 200,000 people from Ukraine have ended up in Germany following Russia’s unprovoked attacks on the country starting in late February 2022.
Ashion herself is one of those displaced, having made it out Kyiv by way of Moldova and Romania. Her male colleagues, who cannot leave the country, are still broadcasting from bomb shelters.
RTL also said it has plans to add more Ukrainians to its staff to allow it to better cover the conflict.
“Ukraine Update” will be available on RTL’s main channel plus the N-TV streaming platform and YouTube.
