Journalists and digital media companies have cut about 3,000 jobs during the first five months of this year.
This includes both layoffs and buyout offers at companies including Gannett, McClatchy, BuzzFeed, Vice and CNN.
This figure is the highest the industry has seen since 2009, according to Bloomberg.
During the same time period in 2009, 7,914 were cut.
