Popular media news website Mediaite is upping its subscription model “for real,” according to an announcement.

The site will start a model similar to that of many newspapers in that users get 10 articles free per month before having to pay.

Viewing additional articles will require the user to login or create a paid account.

The site previously launched Mediaite+, which removed advertising from stories and videos, and that offering will become the name of the new unlimited article offering.

Mediaite is offering a free one month trial for a limited time with a list monthly subscription rate of $4.99 per month. Readers can save a bit by paying for an entire year upfront for $44.99, another popular model for paid news sites.

In what he calls a “compromise,” Mediaite founder and former ABC, NBC and MSNBC anchor, correspondent and executive Dan Abrams notes that his goal was to keep the site available to “casual” readers.

“We want even the casual Mediaite reader to be able see our biggest stories without a subscription,” he wrote in the site’s announcement of the new plan.

The site also promises to invest in more content, including exclusive content only available to Mediaite+ subscribers.
