After Sheinelle Jones announced she’s departing the Saturday “Today” anchor desk, NBC has named its pick to replace her.

  • NBC White House Correspondent Kristen Welker will join Peter Alexander at the weekend anchor desk from Studio 1A.
  • Welker has filled on “Today” and “NBC Nightly News” previously.
  • It’s worth noting that Alexander is also a White House correspondent for NBC News, so the Saturday “Today” anchor team will be packed with extensive political background.
  • Welker, like Alexander, will continue reporting from the White House on select weekdays, and presumably commute back and forth between New York and Washington for the show each week.
  • Neither of them will anchor Sundays, when “Today” is known as “Sunday Today” and is anchored by Willie Geist.

Jones announced she was departing the Saturday “Today” anchor desk in late 2019.

  • She remains with the network and is a permanent co-anchor of “Today Third Hour” Monday through Friday.
  • She had been regularly working six days a week, but decided to cut back to spend more time with her family.
