NBC News correspondent Tom Costello confused his fellow NBCUniversal colleague José Díaz-Balart with his brother, who is a U.S. representative.
Appearing from his home office on “Today” March 19, 2020, Costello was reporting on how Mario Díaz-Balart, a Republican rep from Florida, has tested positive for coronavirus.
José Díaz-Balart is an anchor for Telemundo, which is owned by NBCUniversal.
Costello started his report enthusiastically (but incorrectly) reporting that “José Díaz-Balart” had tested positive before clarifying that he meant to refer to his brother Mario.
Costello appeared to be working without a teleprompter, having to refer to notes on his desk.
