WGN is shutting down CLTV channel
Former Tribune owned WGN will shut down its 24 hour cable news and information channel at the end of the year, reports FTVLive.
- CLTV, which is short for Chicagoland TV, launched in 1993.
- In 2009, Tribune combined its operations at WGN’s studios at Bradley Place, though it continued to operate as a separate channel.
- The station is now owned by Nexstar Media Group after it purchased Tribune, including WGN, earlier this year.
- In a memo to staff, management says that WGN will increase news output on weekends in the first quarter of 2020, though it did not offer further details.
- The memo also says that there will be a small staff reduction, but that CLTV staffers will be able to apply for positions at WGN.
- Currently, CLTV offers original newscasts at select times, while rerunning WGN newscasts at other times.
- It also carries simulcasts of WGN Radio shows with a video component as well as a lineup of original programming on politics, lifestyle and more.
- WGN, which is an independent station, produces over 70 hours of local news a week.
- There’s no immediate word what will take CLTV’s place on Chicagoland cable lineups.
