Could an Disney-ABC blackout be coming to AT&T U-Verse and DirecTV?
Disney carriage agreements with AT&T and DirecTV are expiring soon — and viewers are being warned this could result in a blackout of a variety of channels.
- Disney’s retransmission agreement with AT&T and DirecTV includes the family of Disney, ABC, ESPN and Freeform networks.
- While it’s not clear when the deal expires or if a deadline for talks has been laid out, The Hollywood Reporter says the two companies are in discussions about the terms of such a renewal and have each issued separate statements that seem to indicate things aren’t going well.
- A potential blackout could result in AT&T U-Verse and DirecTV subscribers from losing Disney, ESPN and Freeform networks.
- In addition, viewers in the major markets where Disney owns the local ABC affiliate could also lose access to both network and local programming if they are U-Verse or DIrecTV subscribers.
- Viewers in markets not served by an ABC affiliate owned by Disney would presumably continue to receive ABC assuming the company that owns the local affiliate is up to date with its retransmission agreement with the cable provider.
- The networks would also likely continue to be viewable on other cable and satellite systems (even in those markets affected by the blackout), again assuming retransmission deals are in place with those providers.
