Dallas anchor shares fake news graphics as April Fools Day joke

Heather Hays, the 6 and 9 p.m. anchor at Fox owned KDFW in Dallas, posted a fake news graphic declaring “Trump: Kids must repeat grades” to her public Facebook page as an April Fools Day joke for her kids.

Hays was upfront that the graphic was meant as a joke in the text of her post.

The image appears to have been generated by the self proclaimed “Breaking News Meme Generator” Break Your Own News that is used for both lighthearted jokes but also to create and spread misleading news headlines.

The site lets users enter a headline for the “lower third” as well as text in the ticker and a background image of their choice.

So far, the commenters on the post took the joke well — but many media and tech companies have put a moratorium on April Fools Day pranks due to the coronavirus pandemic.
