Trump reportedly buys YouTube homepage ‘takeover’ ads for election day: Report
YouTube has sold a coveted homepage advertising slot to Donald Trump’s re-election campaign for the days leading up to and including election day, Bloomberg reports.
Exact terms of the deal were not available, though reports peg the cost at between a hundreds of thousand dollars to $1 million or more, according to Bloomberg.
A source told Bloomberg Trump’s campaign has paid to run ads in the large banner on its homepage on what the site sometimes refers to as its masthead.
Buyers typically get to “take over” the homepage of the popular video website when buying the package but can opt in to select targeting strategies (targeting for political ads is even more restricted, according to YouTube).
YouTube is owned by Google, which in turn is owned by Alphabet, and did not comment on the deal to Bloomberg.
Former President Barack Obama’s campaign bought the space in 2012, according to Bloomberg reporting — snapping it up before rival Mitt Romney even had the GOP nomination. Both Trump and Hillary Clinton bought the space during the 2016 election.
Bloomberg also noted that its namesake owner and founder, Michael Bloomberg, who is running for the democratic nomination to face off against Trump in the general election, has spent more than $36.9 million on Google advertising, according to data released by the tech giant.
That’s twice as much as Trump spent with Google.
A YouTube rep did note that the advertising requirements for the space are the same as any other Google property.
In December 2016, CBS News’ “60 Minutes” reported that more than 300 of Trump’s YouTube ads were rejected for violating the site’s published policies.
